Mono Milkvetch

Astragalus monoensis, commonly known as Mono Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, particularly found in the Mono Basin and surrounding areas. It typically inhabits dry, rocky slopes and open grasslands at elevations ranging from 1,800 to 3,000 meters. Mono Milkvetch exhibits a growth habit characterized by its low, spreading form, usually reaching heights of 15 to 50 centimeters. The plant often forms dense clumps, which can help stabilize soil in its native habitat.

The leaves of Astragalus monoensis are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that contribute to its overall feathery appearance. The flowers are distinctive, typically appearing in clusters, and are characterized by their purple to lavender coloration, which attracts various pollinators, including bees. The flowering period generally occurs from late spring to early summer. Following pollination, the plant produces elongated, curved pods that contain several seeds.
