Lavin’s Milkvetch

Astragalus oophorus var. lavinii, commonly known as Lavin’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in the regions of Nevada and California. This variety typically inhabits arid to semi-arid environments, often thriving in sandy soils and rocky outcrops. The growth habit of Lavin’s Milkvetch can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters, with a bushy form characterized by a branching structure that allows it to spread laterally.

The leaves of Lavin’s Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are typically lanceolate to ovate in shape, giving the plant a feathery appearance. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces clusters of distinctive purple to lavender flowers. These flowers are irregular in shape, typical of the Fabaceae family, and are adapted for pollination by various insects. Following the flowering stage, the plant develops elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are dispersed upon maturity.
