Astragalus pachypus var. jaegeri
Astragalus pachypus var.
Also known as: Jaeger's Milkvetch
Astragalus pachypus var. jaegeri, commonly known as Jaeger’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). This variety is native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of the Sierra Nevada and adjacent areas in California. It typically thrives in well-drained soils, often in rocky or gravelly substrates, at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The growth habit of Jaeger’s Milkvetch is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant often forms dense clumps, contributing to its overall bushy appearance.
The leaves of Astragalus pachypus var. jaegeri are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are lanceolate to elliptical in shape, providing a fine-textured foliage. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces clusters of distinctive flowers that are typically purple to violet in color. These flowers are arranged in racemes and are notable for their irregular shape, which is characteristic of many members of the genus Astragalus. Following the flowering stage, the plant develops elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are adapted for dispersal by wind or animal activity.
Ecologically, Jaeger’s Milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for various herbivores. The species is also important for nitrogen fixation, enhancing soil fertility through its symbiotic relationship with rhizobia bacteria. While it may not have widespread human uses, it is occasionally noted for its potential in restoration ecology, particularly in efforts to rehabilitate disturbed alpine environments. Adaptations such as its deep root system enable the plant to access moisture in rocky soils, allowing it to survive in the often harsh conditions of its native range.
