Panamint Milkvetch

Astragalus panamintensis, commonly known as Panamint Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the Panamint Mountains in California, where it thrives in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations typically ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The plant exhibits a growth habit characterized by a low, spreading form, usually reaching heights of 20 to 60 centimeters. Its stems are often hairy and can be either erect or decumbent, contributing to its overall bushy appearance.

The leaves of Astragalus panamintensis are pinnately compound, typically consisting of 15 to 25 leaflets that are narrow and lanceolate, with a glabrous or slightly hairy texture. The flowering period occurs primarily in the spring, producing clusters of small, pea-like flowers that are usually purple or lavender in color, attracting various pollinators. The fruit is a legume, which is a flattened pod that contains several seeds. These pods are often hairy and can be slightly curved, aiding in seed dispersal when they dry and split open.
