Payson’s Milkvetch

Astragalus paysonii, commonly known as Payson’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, specifically found in the states of Utah and Colorado. This species typically inhabits montane and subalpine environments, often growing in rocky or gravelly soils. It exhibits a growth habit characterized by a low, spreading form, reaching heights of approximately 15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches). The plant forms a dense mat, which helps it stabilize the soil in its native habitat.

The leaves of Astragalus paysonii are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are lanceolate to oblong in shape, providing a feathery appearance. The flowers are one of the most distinctive features of this species, presenting in clusters and displaying a range of colors from purple to lavender, often with a yellowish tint.
