Pomona Milkvetch

Astragalus pomonensis, commonly known as Pomona Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southwestern United States, particularly found in California and parts of Nevada. This species typically inhabits dry, rocky slopes and grasslands, often thriving in well-drained soils. Pomona Milkvetch generally exhibits a growth habit that ranges from 30 to 90 centimeters in height, forming a dense, bushy clump. The stems are erect and can be somewhat hairy, contributing to the plant’s overall texture.

The leaves of Astragalus pomonensis are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are typically oval to lanceolate in shape. These leaves are arranged alternately along the stem and can have a slightly glaucous appearance. The flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer, are borne in racemes and display a characteristic purple to violet coloration, attracting various pollinators, including bees. The fruit of this species is a legume, forming elongated pods that contain several seeds. These pods are often hairy and can be somewhat flattened, aiding in seed dispersal.
