Cutler’s Milkvetch

Astragalus preussii var. cutleri, commonly known as Cutler’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of Colorado and New Mexico. This variety typically grows in well-drained, rocky soils at elevations ranging from 2,500 to 3,600 meters. It exhibits a growth habit characterized by a height of 15 to 60 centimeters, forming a dense, clumped structure that can spread laterally, contributing to its overall form.

The leaves of Cutler’s Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are lanceolate to oblong in shape, giving the foliage a feathery appearance. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are arranged in racemes and are typically purple to lavender in color, attracting various pollinators, including bees. The fruit is a legume, which is elongated and can contain several seeds, playing a crucial role in the plant’s reproductive strategy.
