Astragalus preussii var.

Also known as: Preuss' Milkvetch

Astragalus preussii var. preussii, commonly known as Preuss’ Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This variety is native to the southwestern United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of New Mexico and Colorado. It typically thrives in well-drained soils and is often associated with open, rocky habitats, including alpine meadows and sagebrush communities. The growth habit of Preuss’ Milkvetch can reach heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches), exhibiting a clumped form with multiple stems arising from a central crown.

The leaves of Astragalus preussii var. preussii are pinnately compound, generally consisting of 9 to 15 leaflets that are lanceolate to oblong in shape, which contribute to the plant’s overall green appearance. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are typically purple to lavender and are arranged in dense racemes, attracting various pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Following flowering, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are adapted for dispersal by wind or animals. This species plays a significant ecological role by fixing nitrogen in the soil, thus enhancing soil fertility and supporting the growth of surrounding plant communities.

Preuss’ Milkvetch exhibits several adaptations that enable it to thrive in its native habitat. Its deep root system allows it to access moisture and nutrients from deeper soil layers, which is particularly advantageous in the often arid conditions of its range. Additionally, the plant’s ability to form symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria enhances its resilience in nutrient-poor soils. While primarily of ecological importance, Astragalus preussii var. preussii may also have potential human uses, particularly in traditional medicine, though specific applications require further study.
