This species typically grows in moist, well-drained soils, often inhabiting riparian zones and other areas with adequate water availability. Woodyroot Milkvetch can reach a height of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters, exhibiting a sprawling or upright growth habit. The stems are generally woody at the base, which contributes to its common name, and the plant often forms dense clumps.
The leaves of Astragalus riparius are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are typically oval to lanceolate in shape. This foliage is arranged alternately along the stems and contributes to the plant’s overall green appearance during the growing season.
