Western Milkvetch

Astragalus robbinsii var. occidentalis, commonly known as Western Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States and Canada, particularly found in regions such as the Rocky Mountains and surrounding foothills. This variety typically grows in well-drained soils, often in disturbed areas, grasslands, and open forests. The growth habit of Western Milkvetch is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of 30 to 90 centimeters (about 12 to 35 inches). The plant has a bushy appearance, with multiple stems arising from a central crown.

The leaves of Western Milkvetch are pinnately compound, usually consisting of 10 to 15 leaflets that are narrow and lanceolate, giving them a feathery appearance. The flowers are arranged in racemes and are typically purple to lavender in color, blooming from late spring to early summer. Each flower has a distinctive banner petal that is larger than the other petals, which aids in attracting pollinators. Following flowering, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are dispersed by wind or animal activity. Western Milkvetch plays an important ecological role as a nitrogen-fixing species, contributing to soil fertility and providing forage for various herbivores. Additionally, it is utilized in ecological restoration projects and as a cover crop due to its ability to improve soil structure and health. Notably, the plant has adaptations that allow it to thrive in harsh environments, including deep taproots that access moisture and nutrients in arid conditions, as well as a tolerance to drought and poor soil quality.
