Also known as: Spalding's Milkvetch

Astragalus spaldingii, commonly known as Spalding’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the northwestern United States, particularly found in the states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. It typically inhabits open grasslands and sagebrush steppe ecosystems, thriving in well-drained soils. The growth habit of Spalding’s Milkvetch can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters (approximately 12 to 24 inches), exhibiting a bushy form with numerous stems arising from a central crown. The plant has a taproot system that allows it to access deeper soil moisture, which is particularly advantageous in its arid habitat.

The leaves of Astragalus spaldingii are compound, consisting of numerous leaflets that are typically linear to lanceolate in shape, arranged in a pinnate fashion. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are distinctive and showy, featuring a raceme of purple to lavender blooms that are characteristic of the Fabaceae family. Each flower has a typical legume structure, with a banner, wings, and keel, and they are an important nectar source for various pollinators. Following flowering, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods containing several seeds, which are dispersed by wind or animals.

Ecologically, Spalding’s Milkvetch plays a critical role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for herbivores. It is also known to fix nitrogen in the soil, enhancing soil fertility and supporting the growth of surrounding vegetation. The species has adaptations such as drought tolerance, which allows it to survive in low-water conditions, and its ability to thrive in disturbed soils makes it a candidate for restoration projects in its native range. However, due to habitat loss and degradation, Spalding’s Milkvetch is considered a species of concern, and conservation efforts are underway to protect its populations and habitats.
