Astragalus tweedyi

Astragalus tweedyi, commonly known as Tweedy's Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family.

Also known as: Tweedy's Milkvetch

Astragalus tweedyi, commonly known as Tweedy’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. This species is native to the mountainous regions of the western United States, particularly found in parts of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. It typically inhabits rocky slopes, alpine meadows, and disturbed areas, thriving in well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters.

Tweedy’s Milkvetch exhibits a growth habit characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 20 to 60 centimeters. The plant has a bushy appearance with multiple stems arising from a central crown. The leaves are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are oblong to elliptical in shape, providing a feathery texture. Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer, producing clusters of purple to lavender flowers that are typical of the genus Astragalus. The flowers are bilaterally symmetrical and attract various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods containing several seeds, which are dispersed when the pods dry and split open.

Ecologically, Astragalus tweedyi plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for herbivores. The plant is also known for its nitrogen-fixing capabilities, which enhance soil fertility and support surrounding plant communities. While there are limited documented human uses, some species within the Astragalus genus are known for their medicinal properties, although specific applications of Tweedy’s Milkvetch have not been extensively studied. Notably, this species has adapted to its high-elevation environment through a robust root system that allows it to access moisture and nutrients in rocky substrates, as well as through its ability to withstand cold temperatures and short growing seasons.
