Tundra Milkvetch

Astragalus umbellatus, commonly known as Tundra Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is primarily found in the Arctic and subarctic regions, with a native range that includes parts of Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. Tundra Milkvetch typically grows in well-drained soils, often in tundra ecosystems, where it can thrive in harsh climatic conditions characterized by short growing seasons and low temperatures.

The growth habit of Astragalus umbellatus is generally low and compact, with a height ranging from 10 to 30 centimeters. The plant exhibits a rosette form, with leaves that are pinnately compound, consisting of several small leaflets that are often glaucous, giving them a pale appearance. The flowers of Tundra Milkvetch are arranged in umbels, hence the common name, and are typically purple to lavender in color. These flowers are adapted for pollination by insects, which are attracted to their vibrant coloration. Following flowering, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are dispersed when the pods mature and dehisce.
