Astragalus whitneyi var. siskiyouensis
Astragalus whitneyi var.
Also known as: Siskiyou Milkvetch
Astragalus whitneyi var. siskiyouensis, commonly known as Siskiyou Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon and northern California. This variety typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,400 meters. The growth habit of Siskiyou Milkvetch is characterized by its erect to ascending form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant often has a bushy appearance due to its multiple stems arising from a central crown.
The leaves of Siskiyou Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of 12 to 20 leaflets that are linear to lanceolate in shape, measuring about 1 to 3 centimeters in length. The foliage is often covered with a fine layer of hairs, giving it a slightly grayish-green appearance. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are borne in dense racemes and are typically purple to lavender in color, with a distinctive banner petal that is larger than the wings and keel. The fruit is a legume, usually containing one to several seeds, and is characterized by its flattened, elongated pods that can be up to 4 centimeters long.
Ecologically, Siskiyou Milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for various herbivores. It is also a nitrogen-fixing species, which enhances soil fertility and supports the surrounding plant community. The plant has adaptations to its environment, including a deep taproot that allows it to access moisture and nutrients from deeper soil layers, which is particularly advantageous in the rocky, drought-prone regions it inhabits. Additionally, its flowering period coincides with the availability of pollinators, ensuring successful reproduction in its specialized habitat.
