Also known as: Yellow Wild Indigo
Baptisia sphaerocarpa, commonly known as Yellow Wild Indigo, is native to the southeastern United States, particularly thriving in dry, sandy soils of open woodlands and prairies. This perennial herbaceous plant typically reaches a height of 2 to 3 feet, forming a bushy, upright habit with a clumping growth form. The leaves are trifoliate, resembling those of clover, and are a vibrant green, providing an attractive backdrop for the striking yellow flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. These flowers are arranged in racemes and are not only visually appealing but also serve as a vital nectar source for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering period, the plant produces distinctive, inflated seed pods that mature to a dark brown, adding visual interest even after the blooms have faded.
