Also known as: Kearney's Bluestar
Amsonia kearneyana, commonly known as Kearney’s Bluestar, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southwestern United States, primarily found in the state of Arizona. It typically inhabits open woodlands and grasslands, often thriving in well-drained soils and areas with moderate moisture. This species usually grows to a height of 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches) and exhibits an upright, clumping growth habit. The stems are slender and may become somewhat woody at the base as the plant matures.
The leaves of Kearney’s Bluestar are lanceolate to linear, measuring 5 to 15 centimeters (2 to 6 inches) in length, and are arranged in an alternate pattern along the stems. The foliage is a vibrant green, providing a lush backdrop for the plant’s striking flowers. Blooming occurs in late spring to early summer, producing clusters of star-shaped, pale blue to lavender flowers that are approximately 2 to 3 centimeters (0.8 to 1.2 inches) across. These flowers are not only visually appealing but also attract various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, narrow seed pods that contain small, flattened seeds, which are dispersed by wind or water.
Kearney’s Bluestar plays a role in its ecosystem by providing nectar and habitat for pollinators, contributing to local biodiversity. It is also valued in horticulture for its ornamental qualities and adaptability to xeriscaping, making it suitable for water-wise gardens. One interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to tolerate drought conditions once established, allowing it to survive in arid environments while still thriving during wetter periods. This resilience, combined with its attractive flowers and foliage, makes Amsonia kearneyana a desirable addition to native plant gardens and restoration projects.
