Also known as: Mosquito Plant
Agastache cana, commonly known as the Mosquito Plant, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, particularly thriving in regions such as New Mexico and Texas. This species typically grows to a height of 60 to 90 centimeters (2 to 3 feet) and exhibits a bushy, upright form. The stems are square in cross-section, a characteristic feature of the Lamiaceae family to which it belongs. The plant prefers well-drained soils and can often be found in open grasslands, rocky slopes, and disturbed areas.
The leaves of Agastache cana are aromatic, lanceolate to ovate in shape, and can measure up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) long. They are typically a gray-green color and may have a slightly fuzzy texture due to fine hairs. The flowers, which are a striking shade of lavender to pink, are arranged in dense spikes that can reach up to 15 centimeters (6 inches) in length. Blooming occurs from mid-summer to early fall, attracting a variety of pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds. The fruit of the plant is a small, dry achene that contains seeds, which are dispersed by wind and water.
Agastache cana plays a significant ecological role by providing nectar and pollen for pollinators, thus supporting local biodiversity. Additionally, the plant is known for its mosquito-repellent properties, which is where its common name derives from; the leaves can be crushed and used to create a natural insect repellent. This species is also valued in gardens for its ornamental qualities and drought tolerance, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping. Its ability to thrive in dry, arid conditions is an adaptation that allows it to survive in its native habitats, where water availability can be limited.
