Also known as: Maquei
Aristotelia chilensis, commonly known as Maquei, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the temperate rainforests of central and southern Chile and Argentina. This species typically reaches a height of 3 to 5 meters, exhibiting a bushy and rounded form. The branches are often slender, and the foliage is dense, contributing to its overall compact appearance. Aristotelia chilensis thrives in well-drained soils and prefers a humid, temperate climate, often found in understory habitats where it can benefit from filtered sunlight.
The leaves of Maquei are simple, alternate, and elliptic to ovate in shape, measuring approximately 5 to 10 centimeters in length. They are dark green and glossy on the upper surface, with a paler underside, and exhibit a serrated margin. The plant produces small, white to pale pink flowers that are typically borne in clusters, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, Aristotelia chilensis develops small, round berries that are around 1 centimeter in diameter, turning from green to dark purple or black as they ripen. These berries are edible and are consumed by both wildlife and humans, often used to make jams, jellies, and beverages.
Ecologically, Aristotelia chilensis plays a significant role in its native habitat, providing food and shelter for various animals, including birds and mammals that feed on its fruits. The species is also important for soil stabilization and contributes to the overall biodiversity of the forest ecosystem. An interesting adaptation of Maquei is its ability to thrive in shaded environments, allowing it to colonize areas where light is limited, which is a common characteristic of many understory plants. This adaptability, along with its attractive foliage and fruit, makes Aristotelia chilensis a valuable species for both ecological restoration and ornamental gardening.
