Mojave Suncup

Camissonia campestris ssp. campestris, commonly known as Mojave Suncup, is native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States, particularly thriving in the Mojave Desert. This perennial herb typically grows to a height of 12 to 30 inches, exhibiting a rosette form with slender, erect stems. The leaves are lanceolate to ovate, often glaucous, and can reach up to 4 inches in length, providing a striking contrast to the bright yellow flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer. The flowers are cup-shaped, measuring about 1 to 2 inches in diameter, and attract various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, which play a crucial role in its reproduction. Following flowering, the plant produces small, elongated capsules containing seeds that are dispersed by wind and water, aiding in its propagation across the desert landscape.

Mojave Suncup is well-adapted to its harsh environment, exhibiting drought tolerance and a deep root system that allows it to access moisture from deeper soil layers.
