Common Bearpoppy

Arctomecon humilis, commonly known as the Common Bearpoppy, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States, particularly found in parts of Nevada and Utah. This species typically grows in sandy or rocky soils, often in desert scrub and open woodlands, where it can thrive in harsh, dry conditions. The growth habit of A. humilis generally reaches a height of 30 to 60 centimeters, forming a low, spreading mat with a rosette of leaves at its base.

The leaves of Common Bearpoppy are deeply lobed and can be characterized by their silvery-green color, which is a result of a dense covering of fine hairs that help reduce water loss. The plant produces striking flowers that are large and cup-shaped, typically appearing in shades of white to pale yellow, with prominent yellow stamens. These flowers bloom primarily in the spring and are adapted for pollination by insects, particularly bees. Following the flowering period, A. humilis develops elongated, slender seed pods that contain several seeds, which are dispersed by wind or water.

Ecologically, Common Bearpoppy plays a role in stabilizing sandy soils and providing habitat for various pollinators.
