Desert Bearpoppy

Arctomecon merriamii, commonly known as Desert Bearpoppy, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States, primarily found in parts of Nevada and California. This species typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils and is often associated with desert habitats, particularly in areas with calcareous substrates. Desert Bearpoppy generally reaches a height of 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches) and exhibits a rosette growth form, with its leaves emerging from a central base. The leaves are deeply lobed, with a bluish-green color and a waxy texture that helps reduce water loss in its harsh environment.

The flowers of Arctomecon merriamii are one of its most notable features, characterized by their large, showy, white to pale yellow petals that can reach up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in diameter. These flowers typically bloom in the spring and attract various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, which are essential for its reproduction. After flowering, the plant produces elongated, capsule-like fruits that contain several small seeds.
