Siberian Sea Thrift

Armeria maritima ssp. sibirica, commonly known as Siberian Sea Thrift, is a subspecies of the broader Armeria maritima, native to the coastal regions of Siberia and parts of northeastern Asia. This perennial herb typically grows in rocky, sandy soils, often found in coastal meadows and cliffs, where it is adapted to withstand harsh environmental conditions, including salt spray and wind exposure. The growth habit of Siberian Sea Thrift is characterized by a compact form, reaching heights of approximately 15 to 30 centimeters. The plant exhibits a tufted growth pattern, with dense clumps of foliage that help it stabilize in its often challenging habitat.

The leaves of Siberian Sea Thrift are narrow, linear, and grass-like, typically measuring 10 to 20 centimeters in length. They are evergreen, providing year-round greenery and a robust base for the flowering stems. The flowers are one of the most notable features of this subspecies, forming dense clusters atop slender, erect stems that can reach up to 30 centimeters in height. Following the flowering period, the plant produces small, dry, indehiscent fruits known as achenes, which facilitate wind dispersal.
