Hen’s Eyes

Ardisia crenata, commonly known as Hen’s Eyes, is a species of flowering plant in the family Primulaceae. It is native to the subtropical and tropical regions of Asia, particularly found in countries such as China, Japan, and Taiwan. This species typically exhibits a shrubby growth habit, reaching heights of approximately 1 to 2 meters. The plant has a dense and bushy form, often spreading outwards with a rounded canopy, which makes it an attractive ornamental choice in gardens and landscapes.

The leaves of Ardisia crenata are glossy, dark green, and elliptical, measuring between 5 to 15 centimeters in length. They are arranged alternately along the stems and have a distinctive crenate (wavy) margin, which contributes to the common name. The flowers are small, usually white or pale pink, and are borne in clusters, appearing in the late summer to early fall. Following flowering, the plant produces bright red berries that are approximately 1 centimeter in diameter, which are not only visually striking but also serve as a food source for various bird species, thus playing a role in seed dispersal.

In addition to its ecological importance, Ardisia crenata is often cultivated for ornamental purposes due to its attractive foliage and fruit.
