Deer’s Foot

Achlys californica, commonly known as Deer’s Foot, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the moist, shaded understories of forests in the western United States, particularly in California and Oregon. This species typically grows to a height of 30 to 60 centimeters and exhibits a clumping growth habit, forming dense colonies through its rhizomatous root system. The plant often thrives in areas with rich, well-drained soils and is commonly found in association with other forest understory species.

The leaves of Achlys californica are distinctive, characterized by their large, palmate shape and a soft, hairy texture. Each leaf can be divided into several lobes, giving them a unique appearance reminiscent of a deer’s foot, which is how the common name is derived.
