Anemone berlandieri, commonly known as Tenpetal Thimbleweed, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the central and southern regions of the United States, particularly found in areas such as the Great Plains and parts of the Midwest. This species typically grows to a height of 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches) and exhibits a clumping growth habit. The plant forms a basal rosette of leaves that are deeply lobed and can reach up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) in length. The stems are slender and erect, supporting the flower heads that emerge in late spring to early summer.
The flowers of Anemone berlandieri are distinctive, characterized by their unique structure, which features five to ten petal-like sepals that are usually white to pale yellow in color. These sepals surround a central cluster of numerous stamens, giving the flower a thimble-like appearance, which is the origin of its common name. Following the flowering period, the plant produces achenes, which are small, dry fruits that contain a single seed. The seeds are dispersed by wind and can remain viable in the soil for several years, allowing for effective colonization of new areas.
Ecologically, Tenpetal Thimbleweed plays a role in its native habitat by providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. It is often found in prairies, open woods, and along roadsides, where it contributes to the biodiversity of these ecosystems. The plant is also used in traditional medicine by some Indigenous peoples for its potential health benefits. Anemone berlandieri exhibits adaptations such as a deep root system, which allows it to access moisture and nutrients in the soil, making it well-suited for the often dry and variable conditions of its native range.
