Anemone multifida var. tetonensis
Anemone multifida var.
Also known as: Pacific Anemone
Anemone multifida var. tetonensis, commonly known as the Pacific Anemone, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the mountainous regions of the western United States, particularly found in the Teton Range of Wyoming and parts of Idaho and Montana. This variety typically grows in well-drained soils at higher elevations, often in meadows or open forests. The growth habit of A. multifida var. tetonensis usually reaches heights of 15 to 30 centimeters, with a clumping form that allows it to spread through rhizomatous growth.
The leaves of the Pacific Anemone are deeply lobed and divided, giving them a finely dissected appearance that can be quite striking. The flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer, are characterized by their cup-shaped, white to pale lavender petals, surrounding a central cluster of yellow stamens. Each flower typically measures 3 to 5 centimeters in diameter and is borne on slender, upright stems. Following flowering, the plant produces achenes that are equipped with long, feathery tails, aiding in wind dispersal. Ecologically, Anemone multifida var. tetonensis plays a role in attracting pollinators, including various species of bees and butterflies, which are drawn to its nectar-rich flowers.
An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in alpine and subalpine environments, where it endures harsh weather conditions, including cold temperatures and strong winds. The finely divided leaves reduce water loss through transpiration, making it well-suited for its native habitat. Additionally, the plant’s rhizomatous growth allows it to establish and persist in nutrient-poor soils, contributing to its resilience in challenging ecological niches. While primarily valued for its ornamental qualities in gardens, the Pacific Anemone also holds significance in local ecosystems, providing habitat and food sources for various wildlife.
