Anemone virginiana var. virginiana
Anemone virginiana var.
Also known as: Tall Thimbleweed
Anemone virginiana var. virginiana, commonly known as Tall Thimbleweed, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to eastern North America, with a distribution that spans from southern Canada to the eastern United States, extending as far south as North Carolina and west to Missouri. This variety typically thrives in open woodlands, meadows, and along forest edges, favoring well-drained, moist soils. The growth habit of Tall Thimbleweed can reach heights of 60 to 120 centimeters (24 to 48 inches), presenting a robust, upright form characterized by a single, unbranched stem.
The leaves of Anemone virginiana var. virginiana are distinctive, featuring a basal rosette of deeply lobed, palmate leaves that can be up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) wide. The plant produces white to cream-colored flowers that appear in late spring to early summer, typically arranged in loose clusters atop the stem. Each flower consists of five to eight petal-like sepals surrounding a central cluster of numerous stamens, which give the inflorescence a thimble-like appearance, hence the common name. Following flowering, the plant develops achenes, which are small, dry fruits that are equipped with long, feathery tails that facilitate wind dispersal.
Tall Thimbleweed plays a significant ecological role as a nectar source for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, contributing to the biodiversity of its habitats. Additionally, the plant has been used in traditional medicine, although caution is advised due to the presence of toxic compounds in the roots and foliage. Anemone virginiana var. virginiana exhibits adaptations such as a deep root system that allows it to access moisture and nutrients from deeper soil layers, making it resilient in its native habitats. Its ability to thrive in partially shaded environments also enables it to occupy niches within woodland ecosystems where competition with other plants may be reduced.
