Aquilegia micrantha var. micrantha
Aquilegia micrantha var.
Also known as: Mancos Columbine
Aquilegia micrantha var. micrantha, commonly known as Mancos Columbine, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southwestern United States, specifically found in regions of Colorado and New Mexico. This variety typically grows in montane to subalpine habitats, often in moist, rocky soils, and is adapted to elevations ranging from 2,000 to 3,500 meters. The growth habit of Mancos Columbine can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters, exhibiting a clumping form with a rosette of basal leaves and upright flowering stems.
The leaves of Aquilegia micrantha var. micrantha are compound and deeply lobed, often exhibiting a bluish-green coloration that provides a striking contrast to the plant’s flowers. The flowering period occurs primarily in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces distinctive, nodding flowers that are typically 2 to 4 centimeters in length. These flowers feature a unique arrangement of five petal-like sepals that are usually yellow to orange with reddish markings, and they possess elongated spurs that can be up to 2.5 centimeters long. The fruit of this species is a distinctive aggregate of follicles, each containing several seeds, which are dispersed by wind or water after maturation.
Ecologically, Mancos Columbine plays a significant role in its native habitat by providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including hummingbirds and bees. The plant is often used in ornamental gardening due to its attractive flowers and ability to thrive in rocky, well-drained soils. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to tolerate a range of soil moisture levels, allowing it to survive in both moist and drier conditions. This adaptability, combined with its striking floral display, makes Aquilegia micrantha var. micrantha a valuable addition to both natural and cultivated landscapes in its native range.
