Also known as: Incised Agrimony
Agrimonia incisa, commonly known as Incised Agrimony, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. This species is native to eastern North America, where it is primarily found in moist, open woodlands, meadows, and along roadsides. It typically grows to a height of 30 to 90 centimeters (approximately 12 to 35 inches) and exhibits an upright, branching form that allows it to thrive in various habitats.
The leaves of Agrimonia incisa are distinctive, characterized by their deeply incised margins and a pinnate arrangement, with each leaf consisting of several leaflets that are serrated and hairy. The plant produces small, yellow flowers that are borne in elongated clusters, or racemes, at the top of the stems, blooming from late spring to early summer. Each flower features five petals and is surrounded by a whorl of sepals. Following flowering, the plant develops small, bur-like fruits that are covered in hooked bristles, aiding in seed dispersal by attaching to the fur of animals or clothing.
Ecologically, Incised Agrimony plays a role in supporting local pollinator populations, as its flowers attract various insects, including bees and butterflies. Additionally, the plant has been used in traditional herbal medicine for its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, although it should be noted that scientific validation of these uses is limited. An interesting adaptation of Agrimonia incisa is its ability to thrive in disturbed habitats, allowing it to colonize areas that have been altered by human activity or natural events, contributing to the restoration of plant diversity in such environments.
