Agrimonia pubescens, commonly known as Soft Agrimony, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the eastern and central regions of North America.

Also known as: Soft Agrimony

Agrimonia pubescens, commonly known as Soft Agrimony, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the eastern and central regions of North America. Its range extends from southern Ontario and Quebec in Canada, through the northeastern United States, and down to the southeastern states, including parts of the Appalachian region. Soft Agrimony typically grows in moist, well-drained soils and can often be found in open woods, meadows, and along roadsides. The plant usually reaches a height of 0.5 to 1.5 meters (1.5 to 5 feet) and exhibits a bushy growth habit with upright stems that may be slightly hairy.

The leaves of Agrimonia pubescens are pinnately compound, consisting of several leaflets that are serrated along the edges, giving them a distinctive appearance. The leaflets are generally dark green and can be up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) long. The plant produces small, yellow flowers that are arranged in elongated spikes, blooming from late spring to early summer. Each flower has five petals and is approximately 1 to 2 centimeters (0.4 to 0.8 inches) in diameter. Following flowering, the plant develops small, hooked fruits that are dispersed by attaching to the fur of animals or clothing, aiding in its propagation.

Soft Agrimony plays a role in its ecosystem by providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Historically, it has been used in traditional medicine for its astringent properties and is sometimes utilized in herbal remedies for digestive issues. An interesting adaptation of Agrimonia pubescens is its ability to thrive in a variety of soil types, including those that are somewhat acidic, which allows it to occupy a range of habitats. This adaptability contributes to its ecological resilience and helps maintain biodiversity in the areas where it is found.
