Also known as: Hairy Lady's Mantle
Alchemilla monticola, commonly known as Hairy Lady’s Mantle, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. This species is native to the mountainous regions of Europe, particularly found in the Alps and the Carpathians, where it thrives in moist, well-drained soils often in partial shade. The plant typically reaches a height of 20 to 50 centimeters and exhibits a rosette growth form, characterized by its basal leaves that emerge directly from the ground.
The leaves of Alchemilla monticola are notable for their distinctive rounded shape, with a finely serrated margin and a velvety texture due to the presence of fine hairs, which contribute to its common name. The leaves can vary in color from bright green to a darker shade, and they often collect water droplets, creating a decorative appearance. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces small, cup-shaped flowers that are greenish-yellow and arranged in loose clusters. These flowers are not particularly showy but are attractive to various pollinators. Following the flowering phase, the plant produces small, dry fruits known as achenes, which are dispersed by wind and water.
Ecologically, Alchemilla monticola plays a role in stabilizing soil in its native habitats, preventing erosion in mountainous regions. It is also used in traditional herbal medicine for its astringent properties and has been employed in various remedies, particularly for women’s health issues. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, which is common in its native alpine environments. The hairy texture of the leaves not only aids in moisture retention but also provides some protection against herbivory by making the plant less palatable to grazing animals.
