Downy Serviceberry

Amelanchier arborea var. austromontana, commonly known as Downy Serviceberry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the southeastern United States, particularly found in the Appalachian region and extending into parts of the Ozarks. This variety typically grows to a height of 5 to 15 feet, with a rounded to upright form that can be somewhat irregular. The bark is smooth and grayish-brown, often developing a scaly texture with age. The leaves are ovate to elliptic, measuring 2 to 4 inches in length, and exhibit a finely serrated margin. They are initially pubescent, giving them a downy appearance, which is particularly noticeable on the lower surface.

In spring, Downy Serviceberry produces clusters of white flowers that are approximately 1 inch in diameter, each consisting of five petals. These flowers are an important early source of nectar for pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following flowering, the plant develops small, round berries that ripen in late spring to early summer. These berries are typically red to purple and are edible, often consumed fresh or used in jams and jellies.
