Nantucket Serviceberry

Amelanchier nantucketensis, commonly known as Nantucket Serviceberry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the northeastern United States, particularly found on Nantucket Island and surrounding areas. This species typically reaches a height of 3 to 8 meters and exhibits a rounded, multi-stemmed growth habit. The form is often dense and bushy, making it suitable for both natural and cultivated landscapes. It thrives in a variety of soil types but prefers well-drained, acidic soils and can often be found in open woodlands, along edges, and in coastal habitats.

The leaves of Amelanchier nantucketensis are oval to elliptical, measuring 4 to 10 centimeters in length, with a smooth margin and a distinctive serrated edge. They display a vibrant green color during the growing season, turning to shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall, providing seasonal interest. The plant produces white, star-shaped flowers in early spring, which are arranged in racemes and attract various pollinators, including bees. Following the flowering period, the tree bears small, edible fruits known as serviceberries or saskatoons, which are typically dark purple to black when ripe, measuring about 1 centimeter in diameter. These berries are not only consumed by birds and other wildlife but are also harvested by humans for use in jams, jellies, and desserts.

Nantucket Serviceberry plays an important ecological role in its native habitat, providing food and shelter for a variety of birds and mammals.
