Also known as: Limber Pine Dwarf Mistletoe

Arceuthobium cyanocarpum, commonly known as Limber Pine Dwarf Mistletoe, is a hemiparasitic plant species belonging to the family Viscaceae. This mistletoe is primarily found in the western United States, particularly in the Rocky Mountains, where it is associated with its host, the limber pine (Pinus flexilis). Its native range extends from southern Montana to northern New Mexico, thriving in montane and subalpine forest ecosystems. The plant typically exhibits a growth habit characterized by a small, bushy form, reaching heights of approximately 10 to 30 centimeters, depending on environmental conditions and host availability.

The notable characteristics of Arceuthobium cyanocarpum include its evergreen, scale-like leaves that are reduced in size and often appear in clusters. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are typically yellowish-green, with both male and female reproductive structures present on the same plant, a condition known as monoecy. The fruit of Limber Pine Dwarf Mistletoe is a fleshy, blue to black berry, which matures in late summer and is an important food source for various bird species. This mistletoe plays a significant ecological role by influencing the health and growth of its host trees, as well as serving as a habitat for diverse wildlife.

An interesting adaptation of Arceuthobium cyanocarpum is its ability to penetrate the host tree’s bark with specialized haustoria, which allow it to extract water and nutrients while still relying on the host for photosynthesis. This parasitic relationship can lead to reduced vigor and growth in the host tree, particularly in cases of heavy infestation. Despite its parasitic nature, Limber Pine Dwarf Mistletoe contributes to biodiversity within its ecosystem, supporting various pollinators and seed dispersers that rely on its flowers and fruits.
