Also known as: Hedge Maple
Acer campestre, commonly known as Hedge Maple, is a species of maple native to Europe and western Asia. Its natural range extends from southern England and France to the Balkans, as well as parts of Central and Eastern Europe. This deciduous tree typically reaches a height of 8 to 15 meters (26 to 49 feet) and has a broad, rounded crown, which can make it suitable for hedging and urban landscaping. The growth habit is often bushy, with multiple stems emerging from the base, contributing to its use as a dense hedge or screen.
The leaves of Acer campestre are distinctive, featuring a palmate shape with five lobes and a serrated margin, measuring 5 to 10 centimeters (2 to 4 inches) in length. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green, while the underside is a lighter green, often with a slightly hairy texture. In spring, the tree produces small, yellow-green flowers that are grouped in clusters and are not particularly showy. These flowers give way to the characteristic paired samaras, or winged seeds, which mature in late summer and are dispersed by the wind. The Hedge Maple plays an important ecological role by providing habitat and food for various insects and birds, and it is often used in urban areas for its tolerance to pollution and compact soil conditions. Additionally, its wood is valued for its durability and is sometimes used in furniture making and flooring.
Acer campestre exhibits several adaptations that enhance its survival in diverse environments. It is particularly resilient to pruning and can regenerate well after being cut back, making it an ideal choice for hedges. Its ability to thrive in a range of soil types, from clay to sandy soils, and its tolerance to drought conditions further contribute to its popularity in landscaping. The species is also noted for its relatively high resistance to pests and diseases compared to other maple species, which enhances its viability in urban settings.
