Rocky Mountain Maple

Acer glabrum var. glabrum, commonly known as Rocky Mountain Maple, is a deciduous tree or shrub native to western North America, primarily found in the mountainous regions of the Rocky Mountains. Its range extends from British Columbia and Alberta in Canada down through the western United States, including parts of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. This variety typically grows to a height of 3 to 10 meters (10 to 33 feet), exhibiting a multi-stemmed form that can be either bushy or tree-like, depending on environmental conditions and competition with other vegetation.

The leaves of Rocky Mountain Maple are distinctive, characterized by their palmate lobing, usually with three to five lobes, and a glossy green appearance that turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange, or red in the fall. The species produces small, inconspicuous flowers that bloom in spring, typically in clusters known as racemes, and are primarily pollinated by insects. Following flowering, the tree develops paired samaras, which are winged fruits that facilitate wind dispersal. This adaptation aids in the colonization of new areas, particularly in disturbed habitats where the species can thrive. Rocky Mountain Maple plays a significant ecological role in its native habitats, often serving as an important understory species in forests and contributing to soil stabilization and erosion control. Additionally, it is utilized by various wildlife species for food and habitat, while its wood has some applications in crafts and furniture-making, although it is not widely harvested commercially.
