Acer glabrum var. greenei
Acer glabrum var.
Also known as: Greene's Maple
Acer glabrum var. greenei, commonly known as Greene’s Maple, is a variety of the Rocky Mountain Maple, native to the western United States and parts of Canada. Its range primarily includes mountainous regions of the Pacific Northwest, particularly in the states of Washington and Oregon, as well as extending into northern California and southwestern British Columbia. This variety typically grows as a small to medium-sized tree or large shrub, reaching heights of 5 to 15 meters (16 to 49 feet) and exhibiting a rounded to irregular crown. It often takes on a multi-stemmed form, particularly in dense thickets or when growing in challenging environments.
The leaves of Greene’s Maple are a key identifying feature, presenting as simple, palmate lobes with three to five lobes that are typically serrated along the edges. The leaves are dark green above and lighter beneath, turning vibrant shades of yellow to red in the fall, which enhances its ornamental value. In spring, the tree produces small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers that cluster in racemes, followed by the development of paired samaras, or winged seeds, which facilitate wind dispersal. Greene’s Maple plays an important ecological role in its native habitat, providing food and shelter for various wildlife species, including birds and insects. Additionally, the tree is valued for its wood, which is used in furniture making and other crafts, and its sap can be tapped for syrup production, similar to other maple species.
One interesting adaptation of Acer glabrum var. greenei is its ability to thrive in a range of soil types, including those that are rocky or poorly drained, which is typical of its mountainous habitat. This resilience allows it to colonize disturbed areas and contribute to soil stabilization, preventing erosion. Furthermore, its ability to tolerate shade makes it an important species in forest understories, where it can grow alongside larger trees while still receiving sufficient light. These characteristics, combined with its aesthetic appeal, make Greene’s Maple a significant species both ecologically and economically in its native regions.
