Boxelder

Acer negundo var. violaceum, commonly known as Boxelder, is a variety of the Boxelder maple that is native to parts of North America, particularly in the central and western regions of the United States and Canada. This deciduous tree typically reaches heights of 10 to 20 meters (33 to 66 feet) and can have a broad, irregular crown, often with a somewhat shrubby appearance. The growth habit is characterized by a rapid growth rate and a tendency to develop multiple trunks, which can give it a bushy form in some instances.

The leaves of Acer negundo var. violaceum are distinctive, being pinnately compound with 3 to 5 leaflets that are typically coarsely serrated. The leaflets are green above and paler beneath, often exhibiting a slightly glaucous texture. In spring, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are greenish-yellow and appear before the leaves. These flowers are dioecious, meaning that individual trees are either male or female. The fruit is a samara, which is a winged seed that develops in clusters and is dispersed by wind, aiding in the tree’s propagation. Ecologically, Boxelder serves as a food source for various wildlife, including birds and insects, and its rapid growth makes it useful for soil stabilization in disturbed areas. Additionally, the wood is soft and lightweight, often utilized for making crates and boxes, although it is not considered a high-quality timber. Boxelder is also known for its ability to thrive in a variety of soil types and conditions, including urban environments, which contributes to its widespread distribution.
