Acer pensylvanicum, commonly known as the Striped Maple, is a deciduous tree native to the eastern regions of North America, specifically ranging from southern Quebec and Ontario to the Appalachian Mountains in the United States, extending as far south as northern Georgia. This species typically grows in moist, shaded woodland environments, often thriving in rich, well-drained soils. The growth habit of the Striped Maple is characterized by a small to medium size, usually reaching heights of 10 to 25 feet (3 to 8 meters) with a rounded or spreading crown. The trunk is notable for its distinctive greenish-white striped bark, which becomes more pronounced as the tree matures.

The leaves of Acer pensylvanicum are palmate and typically have three to five lobes, measuring 3 to 6 inches (7.5 to 15 cm) in length. The leaf margins are serrated, and the upper surface is a glossy dark green, while the underside is a lighter green with fine hairs. In spring, the tree produces small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers that appear in clusters before the leaves fully unfurl. These flowers are followed by the production of paired samaras, which are the tree’s fruit, maturing in the late summer and dispersing in the fall. The Striped Maple plays a significant ecological role in its native habitat, providing food and shelter for various wildlife species, including birds and small mammals. Additionally, the sap can be harvested and processed similarly to that of the sugar maple, although it is less commonly utilized for syrup production. One interesting adaptation of the Striped Maple is its ability to thrive in understory conditions, allowing it to flourish in shaded environments where many other tree species may struggle.
