Also known as: Silver Maple
Acer saccharinum, commonly known as Silver Maple, is a deciduous tree native to the eastern and central United States and parts of southeastern Canada. It typically thrives in a variety of habitats, including floodplains, riverbanks, and moist lowland areas. The species generally reaches a height of 15 to 30 meters (50 to 100 feet) and can have a broad, spreading crown, often characterized by its fast growth rate. Silver Maples exhibit a distinctive form with long, slender branches that create a graceful, open canopy.
The leaves of Acer saccharinum are one of its most notable features, being palmate with five deeply lobed segments and a silvery underside that gives the tree its common name. The leaves are typically 10 to 20 centimeters (4 to 8 inches) long and turn a vibrant yellow in the fall. In early spring, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are yellow-green in color and appear before the leaves. The fruit is a paired samara, which is a winged seed that facilitates wind dispersal, maturing in late spring and often remaining on the tree into the summer months.
Silver Maple plays an important ecological role as it provides habitat and food for various wildlife species, including birds and mammals. The tree is also valued for its rapid growth and adaptability, making it a popular choice for landscaping and urban planting. Additionally, its sap can be tapped to produce maple syrup, although it is less commonly used for this purpose compared to its close relative, the Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum). An interesting adaptation of Acer saccharinum is its ability to tolerate flooding and wet soils, which allows it to thrive in environments where many other tree species would struggle.
