Balsam Torchwood

Amyris balsamifera, commonly known as Balsam Torchwood, is a tree species native to the Caribbean, particularly found in the Greater Antilles, including islands such as Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. It typically grows in tropical and subtropical climates, thriving in well-drained soils. The growth habit of Balsam Torchwood can reach heights of 10 to 20 meters (approximately 33 to 66 feet), exhibiting a dense, rounded canopy. The trunk is often straight and can be quite thick, with a smooth grayish bark that may become fissured with age.

The leaves of Amyris balsamifera are evergreen, alternate, and lanceolate in shape, measuring 7 to 15 centimeters in length. They are glossy, dark green on the upper surface and paler beneath, giving the tree a vibrant appearance. The flowers are small, white to cream-colored, and are borne in axillary clusters, attracting various pollinators. The fruit is a small, dark brown to black drupe, which contains a single seed and matures in clusters. This species is notable for its aromatic resin, known as “balsam,” which has been historically valued for its fragrance and medicinal properties.

Ecologically, Balsam Torchwood plays a role in its native habitats by providing shelter and food for various wildlife species, including birds and insects. The resin has been utilized by humans for its antiseptic and aromatic qualities, often used in traditional medicine and perfumery. An interesting adaptation of Amyris balsamifera is its ability to thrive in poor soil conditions, which allows it to colonize disturbed areas.
