Agalinis maritima var.

Also known as: Saltmarsh False Foxglove

Agalinis maritima var. maritima, commonly known as Saltmarsh False Foxglove, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the coastal regions of eastern North America, particularly found in salt marshes and brackish wetlands from New Jersey to Florida, and extending westward to Texas. This variety typically grows in low, wet areas and can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters. The growth habit is upright and often forms clumps, with stems that may be branched or unbranched, depending on environmental conditions.

The leaves of Saltmarsh False Foxglove are lanceolate to linear, measuring 3 to 10 centimeters in length, and are arranged alternately along the stem. They are generally glabrous and have a glossy appearance. The flowers, which bloom from late summer to early fall, are one of the most striking features of the plant. They are tubular and can vary in color from pale yellow to deep purple, often with darker purple markings. Each flower is approximately 2 to 4 centimeters long and is borne in racemes at the top of the stems. The fruit is a capsule that contains several small seeds, which are dispersed by wind and water.

Ecologically, Agalinis maritima var. maritima plays a role in coastal ecosystems by providing habitat and food for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Its adaptation to saline environments allows it to thrive in conditions that would be inhospitable to many other plant species. This salt tolerance is facilitated by specialized salt-excreting glands on its leaves, which help to manage osmotic stress in saline soils. While not widely used in horticulture, its unique adaptation to coastal habitats makes it a valuable species for restoration projects aimed at preserving wetland ecosystems.
