Agalinis paupercula var. paupercula
Agalinis paupercula var.
Also known as: Smallflower False Foxglove
Agalinis paupercula var. paupercula, commonly known as Smallflower False Foxglove, is a herbaceous perennial plant native to the eastern United States, particularly found in regions such as the southeastern states and parts of the Midwest. This variety typically grows in moist habitats, including meadows, wetlands, and along the edges of woodlands, where it can thrive in partial shade to full sun. The growth habit of Smallflower False Foxglove is characterized by its upright form, reaching heights of approximately 15 to 60 centimeters (6 to 24 inches). The plant often exhibits a clumping growth pattern, with multiple stems emerging from a central base.
The leaves of Agalinis paupercula var. paupercula are lanceolate to ovate, measuring about 2 to 10 centimeters in length, and are arranged oppositely along the stem. The flowers, which are the most notable feature of this species, are small and tubular, typically measuring 1 to 2.5 centimeters in length, and are borne in loose racemes at the top of the stems. The corolla is usually pale yellow to cream-colored, often with purple markings, which attract pollinators such as bees. Following flowering, the plant produces elongated capsules that contain small seeds, which are dispersed by wind or water, aiding in the plant’s propagation across its native range.
Ecologically, Smallflower False Foxglove plays a role in local ecosystems by providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, thus supporting biodiversity. While it does not have significant human uses, it can be appreciated for its ornamental value in native plant gardens and restoration projects. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, a characteristic that allows it to occupy specific ecological niches where other plants may struggle, thereby contributing to the complexity and richness of its habitat.
