Agalinis strictifolia, commonly known as Stiffleaf False Foxglove, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the eastern United States, particularly found in regions such as the southeastern states and extending into parts of the Midwest. This species typically thrives in moist, open habitats, including meadows, wetlands, and along the edges of woodlands. The growth habit of Agalinis strictifolia is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 90 centimeters (12 to 35 inches). The plant often exhibits a clumping growth pattern, with multiple stems arising from a central base.
Notable characteristics of Stiffleaf False Foxglove include its narrow, lanceolate leaves that are arranged oppositely along the stems. The leaves are stiff and can be up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) long, contributing to the plant’s common name. The flowering period typically occurs from late summer to early fall, during which the plant produces showy, tubular flowers that are usually pink to purple in color, with a distinctive white throat and darker markings. The flowers are borne in racemes at the top of the stems, attracting various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering stage, Agalinis strictifolia produces elongated capsules that contain small seeds, facilitating its reproduction and dispersal.
Ecologically, Stiffleaf False Foxglove plays a role in supporting local pollinator populations, contributing to the biodiversity of its native habitats. The plant’s preference for moist soils allows it to thrive in environments that may be less hospitable to other species, thus helping to stabilize soil and prevent erosion. While it is not widely cultivated for human use, it can be appreciated for its ornamental value in native plant gardens and restoration projects. An interesting adaptation of Agalinis strictifolia is its ability to tolerate varying moisture levels, which enables it to survive in both wet and moderately dry conditions, making it a resilient species within its native range.
Plant in well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells.
