Aliciella latifolia, commonly known as broad-leaf gilia, is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Polemoniaceae.
Also known as: Broad-leaf Gilia
Aliciella latifolia, commonly known as broad-leaf gilia, is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Polemoniaceae. This species is native to the western United States, primarily found in regions such as California, Nevada, and Utah. It typically inhabits open, dry habitats including grasslands, scrublands, and disturbed areas, often thriving in sandy or rocky soils at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,500 meters.
The growth habit of Aliciella latifolia is characterized by its erect, herbaceous form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant features broad, lanceolate to ovate leaves that are arranged alternately along the stem, with a distinctive green coloration and a slightly hairy texture. The flowers of broad-leaf gilia are tubular and can vary in color from white to pale lavender, often with darker markings. These flowers are borne in loose clusters at the end of the stems and typically bloom from late spring to early summer, attracting a variety of pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Following flowering, the plant produces small, elongated capsules containing seeds that are dispersed by wind or water.
Aliciella latifolia plays an important ecological role in its native habitats, providing nectar and pollen for pollinators and contributing to the overall biodiversity of the ecosystem. It is also utilized in native plant landscaping and restoration projects due to its adaptability and resilience in arid environments. Notably, this species has developed adaptations to conserve water, such as its broad leaves that can reduce transpiration and its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, making it an important species for maintaining ecological balance in its native range.
Sow seeds in spring or fall. Space plants 12-18 inches apart.
