Also known as: Mussentuchit Creek Gilia
Aliciella tenuis, commonly known as Mussentuchit Creek gilia, is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Polemoniaceae. This species is native to the southwestern United States, specifically found in the state of Utah. Its distribution is primarily concentrated in the region surrounding Mussentuchit Creek, where it thrives in arid and semi-arid environments, often in sandy or gravelly soils.
Aliciella tenuis typically exhibits a growth habit that ranges from 15 to 45 centimeters in height, forming a low, spreading mat or clump. The plant has slender, linear leaves that are arranged basally and can be up to 10 centimeters long. The flowers are one of its most notable characteristics, emerging in clusters at the top of erect stems. They are tubular and often exhibit a pale lavender to white coloration, with five lobes that can be slightly flared. Flowering occurs primarily in the late spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The fruit of Aliciella tenuis is a capsule that contains several small seeds, which are dispersed upon maturation.
Ecologically, Mussentuchit Creek gilia plays a role in its native habitat by providing nectar and pollen for pollinators, thus contributing to the local ecosystem’s biodiversity. It is adapted to its environment through its ability to withstand drought conditions, which is crucial for survival in its arid habitat. The plant’s growth form and leaf structure help minimize water loss, making it well-suited to the harsh conditions of its native range. While there are no significant human uses reported for Aliciella tenuis, its role in supporting local wildlife and its unique adaptations make it an important species within its ecosystem.
