Also known as: Feathered Mosquitofern
Azolla pinnata, commonly known as Feathered Mosquitofern, is a small aquatic fern belonging to the family Salviniaceae. This species is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world, particularly found in Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, and Australia. It typically inhabits freshwater environments such as ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams, where it thrives in warm, shallow waters. The growth habit of Azolla pinnata is characterized by its floating form, with individual plants generally reaching heights of 1 to 3 centimeters. The fern has a distinctive feather-like appearance due to its finely divided, highly lobed leaves that are bright green and may exhibit a reddish tint under certain environmental conditions.
The leaves of Azolla pinnata are small and intricately divided, giving the plant a delicate, feathery look. It reproduces both sexually and asexually, with sporocarps containing spores forming on the upper surfaces of the leaves. The plant does not produce traditional flowers; instead, it relies on its spores for reproduction. Azolla pinnata is known for its ecological role as a floating cover that provides habitat and food for various aquatic organisms. It also plays a significant role in nitrogen fixation, thanks to its symbiotic relationship with the cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae, which resides in specialized cavities within the fern’s leaves. This adaptation allows Azolla pinnata to enhance nutrient availability in its environment, making it beneficial for agricultural practices, particularly in rice paddies, where it can improve soil fertility and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.
