Western Spleenwort

Asplenium vespertinum, commonly known as Western Spleenwort, is a fern species native to the western regions of North America, particularly found in areas ranging from British Columbia to California, and extending eastward to parts of Montana and Wyoming. This perennial fern typically grows in shaded, moist environments, often favoring rocky outcrops, forest understories, and cliff faces. The growth habit of Western Spleenwort is characterized by its erect, tufted form, reaching heights of 15 to 30 centimeters. The fronds are generally lanceolate to ovate, measuring 10 to 30 centimeters in length, and are borne on slender, dark brown to black stipes.

The leaves of Asplenium vespertinum are its most notable feature, displaying a rich green color and a finely dissected appearance with numerous pinnae that are arranged in a feathery pattern. The leaf margins are often slightly wavy, adding to the fern’s delicate aesthetic. Unlike flowering plants, ferns reproduce via spores rather than seeds; thus, Western Spleenwort does not produce flowers or fruits in the traditional sense. Instead, it bears sporangia, which are typically located on the undersides of the fronds, often clustered in distinct lines. Ecologically, Western Spleenwort plays a role in stabilizing soil and providing habitat for various microfauna. It is also of interest to gardeners and horticulturists for its ornamental value in shade gardens and rockeries.
