Also known as: Jones' False Cloak Fern

Argyrochosma jonesii, commonly known as Jones’ False Cloak Fern, is a perennial fern species native to the western United States, particularly found in regions such as the Rocky Mountains and surrounding areas. This fern typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils and is often associated with open woodlands and grasslands at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The growth habit of A. jonesii is characterized by a clumping form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The fronds are finely divided and exhibit a delicate, lacy appearance, which contributes to its ornamental value in gardens and landscapes.

The leaves of Jones’ False Cloak Fern are pinnate, with a distinctive light green to gray-green coloration, and they can be up to 40 centimeters long. The leaflets are small, lanceolate, and arranged alternately along the rachis, giving the fronds a feathery texture. Unlike many ferns, A. jonesii does not produce flowers or fruits in the traditional sense; instead, it reproduces via spores, which are borne in clusters called sori located on the underside of the fronds. This fern plays a significant ecological role by providing habitat and cover for various small organisms and contributing to soil stabilization in its native habitats. Additionally, it is sometimes used in horticulture for its aesthetic appeal and adaptability to xeriscaping, as it can thrive in drier conditions compared to other fern species.

An interesting adaptation of Argyrochosma jonesii is its ability to tolerate a range of light conditions, from partial shade to full sun, which allows it to occupy diverse ecological niches. This adaptability is particularly beneficial in its native mountainous regions, where microclimates can vary significantly. The fern’s finely divided leaves also help reduce water loss through transpiration, making it well-suited for survival in environments where moisture may be limited.
