Astrolepis cochisensis ssp. chihuahuaensis, commonly known as the Chihuahua Scaly Cloakfern, is a subspecies of the Astrolepis cochisensis that is primarily native to the arid regions of northern Mexico, particularly in the states of Chihuahua and Durango. This fern typically thrives in rocky, well-drained soils and is often found in open woodlands, grasslands, and along rocky slopes, where it can benefit from the filtered sunlight and reduced competition from other vegetation. The growth habit of this fern is characterized by its low, spreading form, usually reaching heights of 15 to 30 centimeters. The fronds are pinnate and can grow up to 30 centimeters long, with a distinctive scaly texture that gives the plant its common name.
